City Completes Rehabilitation of Damaged Alleys in Lakeview (June 15, 2009) – The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works is proud to announce the completion of the rehabilitation of 23 unpaved gravel alleys throughout the Lakeview Neighborhood. The $630,000 project, which was funded by the Federal Management Emergency Agency (FEMA), included the reshaping of approximately 18 and a half miles of nine feet wide gravel alleys to improve drainage. The project began in December 2008 and was completed on June 10, 2009.
City of New Orleans to Begin Partial Demolition of Youth Study Center (June 10, 2009) - Officials from the City of New Orleans recently took part in the start of the partial demolition of the Youth Study Center. The partial demolition is part of a multi-phase renovation and rebuilding for the Youth Study Center. The next phase, the installation of modular buildings, is scheduled to go into bid later this month. Current structures or operations surrounding the study center are not subject to disruption by demolition activities.
Residents in New Orleans East Experience Smoother Roadways (June 10, 2009) – Residents of New Orleans East are beginning to see a transformation of their neighborhood streets with the completion of multiple reconstruction projects over the past year. Heavily damaged following Hurricane Katrina, many federal, state and city dollars have gone toward the replacement of roadways, sidewalks and streetscape enhancements in the large New Orleans community. With the recent completion of Redwood Street and Sandalwood Street, as well as the completion of reconstructed streets such as Adele Street, Fulton Street, Cardenas Drive and Papania Drive, the City is working to restore neighborhoods throughout New Orleans East.
City of New Orleans to Hold Public Oral Presentations for the Multi Library Design-Build Project (June 9, 2009) - The City of New Orleans will host oral presentations for its five-library Design-Build contract, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at the New Orleans Public Library Main Library in its Auditorium on the Third Floor (219 Loyola Avenue). The "Five Libraries" Design-Build project includes Nora Navra Neighborhood Library (1902 St. Bernard Ave.); Robert E. Smith Community Library (6301 Canal Blvd.); Norman Mayer (Gentilly) District Library (2098 Foy St.); New Orleans East Regional Library (5641 Read Blvd.); and Algiers Regional Library (3014 Holiday Drive).
City Completes Third Round of Drain Line Cleaning in Preparation for 2009 Hurricane Season (June 1, 2009) - As the City of New Orleans prepares for the beginning of the 2009 Hurricane Season, the Department of Public Works announced the completion of the cleaning of the City's subsurface drainage system. Recently, the City and FEMA reached an agreement to repair all the collapsed drain lines throughout the City. In total, 219 drain lines will be repaired at an estimate cost of $6.2 million. FEMA will reimburse the City for $4.1 million of the project.
